T3 of Slum Village talks about J Dilla, the recent passing of Baatin, and moving forward with the Slum Village legacy among other things.
First we had the passing of J Dilla and now another member of Slum Village has gone. The crazy part is that just a couple days ago, we had confirmation from T3 that Baatin was healthy and was to rejoin Slum Village for a new album.
In the words of 9th Wonder…

I recently came across this project by DJ Jimmy Green and it’s a mash up with Jay-Z’s vocals over J Dilla’s beats. I’ve had a chance to listen to it over the weekend and it’s pretty sick and something fans of Hov and Dilla would appreciate.

Here’s a project I’ve been working on… some of you might like it, some of you might not…. anyway, have a look if you fancy it. Dilla beats, Jay Z’s Blueprint acapellas over the top.
Here’s a little snippet of the tracks, if you fancy checking it first…

And here’s the full project… enjoy! Let me know what you think.

Michael Jackson, as we all know, was a tremendous entertainer who unfortunately passed way before his time. I recently came upon this remix of HIStory done by J Dilla which I’ve never heard before.

I’ve been so busy the entire past week working on projects for clients that I completely forgot about posting the hiphop track of the week. So without further adieu, this week’s track is dedicated to “Fall-N-Love” by Slum Village.
Stare at this picture and get hypnotized by the beat which Dilla sampled from Gap Mangione.

One-Two One-Two
[Chorus]
To fall in love
With the things you do
Don’t sell yourself
To fall in love
With those things you do
[T-3]
Ladies lovin’ my music is like some sex shit
Niggas trying to grip up my mic like it’s a dick
Run around the corner to pick up the new shit
Toss this in the deck so niggas can catch rep
I’m the motherfucker gripping the mic like it’s a joke
Niggas fall in love with the music like it’s a hole
Put down your mic you lost your whole goal
You take it too seriously like it’s a gamble
Fuck this rap shit I listen to classical
In the studio you ask usual, of the
-my lyrical
-of bitches that you would know
I’m out of this cause you wanna be below
Y’all niggas in love with the S
Y’all niggas in love with the S
[Jay-Dee]
Yeah, jetty man I see sometimes,
I sit and wonder when I think about these written rhymes
How’d I get to the point constantly taking all my time?
Time I could have been spending gettin’ cash, gettin’ mine
Hoping one day it comes around
One day when I’m the nigga gettin’ money, gettin’ cash, gettin’ signed
Getting the fuck out the ghetto, cause I’m tired of crime
But it’s a crime that I feel this fucking waste of time
But sometimes I feel like this shit here is a waste of time, yours and mine
To these niggas out here trying to rhyme
Your reason for a better should have been genuine
I do it because it gives me a sort of peace-of-mind
And for the love
[Chorus]
Yo, one-two
Word up, ah one-two, SV, word up, word up, alright.
Uh, uh, uh and to my nigga Jay-Dee uh, uh my nigga T-3 uh, oh
That nigga Baatin uh, uh, that’s my crew,
Yo, uh, oh this going out to my nigga Bust-a,
and all my other motherfu-cka,
What up to all you trying to bust, us.
Trying to get down with us, cause we know you just mad as hell,
Yo I’ll give em the mic, ehhh! So niggas don’t know that I am,
T-3 on the mic,
I do what I do what I like, to get down right tonight.
(Cause?) Cause I get down tonight, yo
Niggas try and put up a fight, wit us, yo alright.
I just got word of a new track called “Reality Check” from the upcoming Jay Stay Paid album droppin’ on June 2nd by Nature Sounds. The album will be a collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed by Pete Rock and put together by none other than Ms. Yancey herself. The album will also include vocals from Black Thought, DOOM, Raekwon, Illa J, Blu, Havoc, M.O.P. and more. Check out the interview w/ Ms. Yancey and OKP and while you’re reading, click play below for some new Dilla.

J Dilla aka Jay Dee aka James D. Yancey aka “your favorite producer’s favorite producer” was one of the greatest to ever bless the boards in the past decade, period. It’s amazing how much work he had his hand in and how many artists he’s influenced during and after his time. He pretty much single-handedly changed the sound of hiphop and soul music, bringing it back to the roots with organic elements. There really wasn’t a time in J Dilla’s life when he wasn’t contributing something useful and meaningful to hiphop. The man was even putting the finishing touches on Donuts from his hospital bed. If that ain’t dedication, I don’t know what is.
I think I can say that J Dilla changed my life. Hell, he inspired me to start up this brand. So thank you, Mr. James Yancey. From Slum Village to The Pharcyde to Black Star to everything else and in between, rest in beats and may your talent influence musicians and artists for many years to come.

Here’s one of my favorite beats by Dilla with one of my favorite rap groups of all time.
