Comic Book Styled Myspace Design + Process Pics

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I’ve done a few of these illustrated, “comic book style” Myspace designs before but this time I thought I’d show some of the process to let you guys see the amount of work that goes into one of these. Everything I do is done digitally and I use a Wacom Cintiq 21UX drawing tablet for all of my work. It’s a very handy tool that I’ve been using for years and I can’t imagine working without it.

For this project, my client wanted something fresh and unique that would stand out from other Myspace designs. Here is what the finished design looks like and it can now be seen live and fully-coded on their Myspace page.

The first step involves gathering all of the notes from the client and sketching out the panels loosely in Photoshop making sure to leave enough room for the sections the client wants incorporated such as the bio, the custom YouTube player, the social network section, and the custom comment box. I like to use a light blue when I do the sketching not for any reason in particular but just because it reminds me of my old days in animation. Animators use “non photo” light blue pencils to sketch out their drawings because they tend not to show up on copies when you’re transferring your drawings from paper to clear cels.

After the entire layout is sketched out, I go over it with a black to clean it up a bit. This is also when I put in a sample image of the Myspace music player, the YouTube player, and anything else that I need to make sure fits into the space I provided such as the little Twitter image from twitstamp.com.

Next, I start working on the text and insert it to make sure everything will look right in the final version.

When everything is ready to be outlined, I take the sketch into Illustrator and trace over each line very carefully with one hand on “ctrl z” at all times. ;) I like to use a custom brush that I created with a 70% angle and a diameter of 3. That way I can control the pressure with my pen and create nice, dynamic lines with various widths.

As you can see, some of the lines still need a little cleaning up, especially in the first panel. This is where I take the outlined drawing back into Photoshop to manually erase all of the tiny errors until it looks nice and clean like this:

Next, I start the coloring with a new layer below the outline layer. I usually try a few different color combinations to see what makes the images pop the best. Finally, I settle on one set of colors.

Now comes the most time-consuming part of all – the detailing. This is the point where I include the shadows and highlights to make everything look as awesome as it can be. This process alone usually takes me about 2-3 days to finish – and that’s when I’m constantly working non-stop. But once this part is over with, everything else is cake.

Finally, I’m ready to add all of the little fun things like sound/special effects. For this project in particular, I used readily-available Photoshop brushes for most of this stuff. One last thing I did for this design was to cover the entire thing in a very subtle red overlay because I felt it brought everything together a little more.

Once that’s finished, the next step is to create the rollovers for some of the images that will light up when hovered over, then slice up the images, and finally code it to make everything work. Firebug on Firefox is my best friend during this process. Also, luckily, I have done a few Myspace designs in my day and have pre-written code from various past designs that I usually cut and paste to save time.

Well, that’s pretty much it. Thanks for reading and I hope you guys enjoyed it! :)

New Artwork by Craola (Artwork)

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

A few weeks back, Greg “Craola” Simkins live painted this piece at G1988, finished it at home, and created “The Good Soul” which is now being auctioned by Greg at G1988 through eBay. The piece looks awesome and it’s by one of my favorite painters. Too bad I don’t have $2000+ to spend on a painting. :(

Just finished a site (w/ artwork) for DJ Scratch of EPMD! (Artwork)

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I had the privilege of working with one of the finest DJs in the industry – DJ Scratch. For the header design, the concept of Scratch playing in front of his old projects with the Jason mask and Superman tee was given to me and my job was to make it look dope. He was pleased with the results and the way the rest of the site turned out as well. For all of you out there sick of the bullshit they play on the radio, tune into Scratch’s radio show!

So I had the chance to work with Senim Silla of Binary Star… (Artwork)

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

We went over concepts for the new logo as well as a crazy new Myspace design for his new band, Ginger. It was dope working with Senim Silla since I’m such a huge fan of Binary Star. By the way, ‘Ginger’ is an anagram for a term which I won’t mention here. ;)

Also, Senim stopped by the crib today and we discussed his upcoming projects. Look out for the return of Binary Star along with a fresh new logo by yours truly!

Cover artwork for Lyrics Born’s Variety Show Season Pho (4)! (Artwork)

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I had a chance to work with Lyrics Born on his latest Variety Show mixtape. If you’ve heard his other Variety Shows, you’d know this series is extremely dope. I was proud to be a part of this. The concept for the artwork was given to me by Lyrics Born’s camp and they were very satisfied with the outcome.

David Choe, Retna, Saber and Alex Pardee on Walrus TV (Video)

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

In 2008 Juxtapoz Magazine along with Upper Playground asked David Choe, Alex Pardee, Saber, and Retna to paint their way across the United States.

Traveling the country from Washington D.C. to the Bay Area with spray cans in their hands and cameras following, they bombed, brushed, and painted, leaving a swath of color and creativity in their wake. This short documentary piece, set to the music of Cutsoquick, captures the artists as they hit the streets collaborating on huge pieces and connecting with fans and admirers of their art from all walks of life.

New Gno t-shirts are here! DOOM, Animal Farm, and finally something for the ladies!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

It’s been a long wait but the second batch of Gno t-shirts are finally here. You can order them directly from the website or just click on the “SHOP” link to the right.

This design was inspired by Danger Doom’s “Sofa King” off The Mouse and the Mask which was in turn inspired by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. The design speaks for itself! Order a rapper, spit out the chain. This shirt is dope and if anyone tells you otherwise, tell them to repeat after me, “I am…Sofa King…We Todd Ed”.

“Animal Farm” is a novel by George Orwell about the Bolshevik revolutionaries that addresses not only the corruption of the revolution by its leaders but also how wickedness, ignorance, and greed can destroy any possibility of a Utopia. Throughout the novel the idea is stated that no matter how equal a society begins, the smarter, richer, or more powerful will eventually rise to the top. The rules of Animal Farm are changed many times throughout the story, each time better benefiting the leaders, until finally one rule replaces all: All Animals Are Equal. But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others.

Due to popular demand, our successful “Grey Matter” design is now on baby doll tees! This design was influenced by Deltron 3030’s “A Brymar College Course”. Deltron 3030 is a favorite here at Gno and a tribute had to be paid to such a classic. The message is to “get creative” by means of upgrading the most powerful computer known to man – the brain. On the back, the text reads “Cause One Day It May Matter”.

The first run of this batch is very limited so make sure you cop ‘em quickly!
